Why August 18? The Story Behind Never Give Up Day

One of the most frequently asked questions I receive about Never Give Up Day is: Why August 18? Why does this special day fall on this specific date?

I’ll be honest—when I first envisioned Never Give Up Day, I anticipated that this question would one day arise. The origin of the date is deeply meaningful, and today, I’m thrilled to share its story with you.

When the opportunity came to organize the very first Never Give Up Day in 2019, it was initially designed as a summer beach event. It needed a date in mid-August, and the first available option was Sunday, August 18. Simple enough, right? But I believe that everything significant in life must carry purpose. I didn’t want August 18 to be just a randomly chosen day. I wanted it to align with something extraordinary—a moment or event that embodied the very essence of perseverance and resilience.

As I searched for a deeper connection, I discovered something truly remarkable. August 18 marks the day that Philippe Croizon, a French swimmer who lost all his limbs, achieved an awe-inspiring feat—connecting all five continents by swimming with prostheses. His story of determination, courage, and triumph over adversity was the perfect embodiment of what Never Give Up Day stands for. At that moment, I knew this was the day.

But the story doesn’t end there. As if guided by something greater, I delved further into history, tracing the origins of the phrase “never give up.” My research led me to an 1845 newspaper in Illinois, which published one of the earliest known poems titled Never Give Up. As I read it, I felt an inexplicable connection. Then, I reached the publication date—August 18, 1845. Goosebumps. Could it really be that this date was more than just a coincidence?

The synchronicities continued to amaze me. Even in the year 1845, the numbers themselves pointed to August 18—1+8+4+5 equals 18. It felt as though the universe itself had been pointing toward this date all along.

What evidence did I need beyond this? August 18 wasn’t just a random date—it was a date steeped in history, perseverance, and purpose. From Philippe Croizon’s incredible achievement to the poetic origins of “never give up,” this date feels destined to hold the power of resilience, hope, and inspiration.

So, when we celebrate Never Give Up Day on August 18 each year, we’re not just marking a spot on the calendar. We’re honoring a legacy of determination, a message that has spanned centuries, and a belief that no matter how hard the journey, giving up is never an option.

Thank you.
